THE PENTAWARDS FESTIVAL

This September, Pentawards will be hosting its first ever online festival, featuring a two-day conference and Gala Ceremony revealing this year's competition winners. Taking place from the 22nd to the 24th September, expert speakers and panel discussions will cover the latest industry topics and celebrate the best packaging designs of 2020.

Stefan Sagmeister

Why Beauty Matters

Stefan Sagmeister will share examples from architecture, design and science to show how beauty goes deeper than the surface and affects how people feel and behave.

Stefan is a renowned Austrian born New York-based graphic designer, storyteller, and typographer. Sagmeister co-founded a design firm called Sagmeister & Walsh Inc. with Jessica Walsh in New York City. He is a two-time Grammy Award winner, who has designed album covers for Lou Reed, OK Go, The Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Jay Z, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny.

Breaking New Ground: How a startup business designed packaging through innnovation

It took only nine years for Xiaomi to go from a start-up to a Fortune 500 company. As a start-up company, Xiaomi had very limited capital and resources to develop products. Despite the limitations, how did Xiaomi's designers use design innovation to create packaging that met product and market needs? How do they optimize packaging costs through design and help Xiaomi products quickly gain users and market share?

Chen Lu is the Design Director of Xiaomi and has over 14 years of experience in packaging and graphic design.

Dave is the multi-award winning creative partner at global brand agency, Superunion.

With a passion to bridge the gap between strategy and creativity, Dave has developed some of the world’s most iconic brands, including Nespresso, Samsung, HSBC, M&S, Investec, Molton Brown and Kew Gardens. Since joining Superunion in 2011, Dave has been responsible for strategic and creative leadership across a number of programmes, including working with Nespresso across dozens of projects – from strategy, identity, and packaging, to in-store experience and communication campaigns, aimed at repositioning Nespresso as a new luxury brand.

Elephant Design - India

A 1989 graduate of National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Ashwini is the co-founder of Elephant*, India's largest independent integrated design consultancy with offices in India & Singapore.

She has done award-winning work for global brands in diverse segments. Some of the awards include Global ReBrand 100 (USA), Worldstar (Germany), & Asiastar (Singapore) for Packaging Excellence, A’Design Awards (Italy) and Best of the Best at CII Design Excellence.

Ashwini was invited by Rockefeller Foundation to participate in Global Social Impact workshop and by Danish Design Association to form the Copenhagen Co-creation Manifesto. She has lectured across more than 20 countries including ICOGRADA Design Week, Business of Design Week and International Design Congress.

She has been jury at Cannes Lions (France), Global ReBrand 100 (USA), The One Club – Young Guns 16 (USA), Spikes Asia (Singapore), Design for Asia (HK), Kyiv IAF (Ukraine), International A’Design Awards (Italy), Design for Change (India) & Kyoorius Design Awards (India). Ashwini was Jury President at the recently concluded D&AD Awards 2019 in London. As a key member of The Design Alliance Asia consortium, Ashwini has edited Colours of Asia book published in Hong Kong that was awarded Design for Asia Special Culture Award by the Hong Kong government. She has written over 50 articles on design that were published through a column in a regional publication that reaches over 10 million readers.

Ashwini is the co-founder of The Collective, an initiative by women creative leaders to create safe work-places for women. She has been speaking on gender & inclusivity at various platforms; most recent being “Leading from Behind” & “Women in Data Science” conferences in early 2019. Impact magazine has recognized Ashwini among 50 Most Influential Women in Media for five consecutive years. She is also on Campaign India’s A-List. Ashwini mentors start-ups through “Nurture” initiative of TiE and from the advisory board of Indian Institute of Management CIIE programme. She is also mentor to the Vedica Scholars Programme. She is on the Advisory Board of School of Design, Pearl Academy.


Design Director
Xiaomi - China

Chen Lu is the design director of Xiaomi and is responsible for packaging, product and VI design. She graduated from Art Center College of Design, USA, with a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design.

She has over 14 years of experience in packaging & graphic design. Lu joined Xiaomi in 2011. According to the needs of different projects, she led Xiaomi's cross-department team and worked together to complete the Mi & Redmi mobile phone packaging series, Ecosystem packaging series, Mi, Mijia and Mitu brand designs, and Mi Home flagship store, CES and MWC Xiaomi exhibition area, and Mi branding products.

She designed the Mi phone packaging which breaks the traditional thinking of the mobile phone packaging. The minimalist, practical and environmental friendly became the packaging style of Mi phone. Led the team to create a packaging form suitable for Mi e-commerce platform so that the package not only serves the product but also suits the needs of platform development.

Born and raised in Florence, Italy, Daniele moved to the United States nearly 25 years ago.

A brand-builder since young age, his career splits almost evenly between the agencies and the corporate world. Daniele has a passion for understanding the customer mindset, online and in traditional retail, anticipating needs and inventing new experiences. His design work transformed and brought to new levels brands like Starbucks, Tazo, and more recently a portfolio of more than a dozen private brands, owned by Amazon.
